Lighting Framed Artwork

While your framed fine art print will look good in normal room light, it will appear even better with special lighting. To light your photograph, install track lighting or individual fixtures in the ceiling for each picture, using about a 65-watt incandescent spotlight. For longer walls you can use floodlights as wall washers.

Highlight your favorite artwork with light from above, or up-light from the floor. Using light on your favorite artwork can really uplift the look and feel of a room. Dark-walled rooms are particularly enhanced with illuminated groupings of your favorite artwork.

Light Adds Ambience to Your Home

Create a focal point, jazz-up living areas and create drama and atmosphere with light. It brings out the detail and beauty of artwork and creates a unique mood within a room. It can even make a room feel larger or more soothing. The play of light and shadow can transform an ordinary-looking room into a special space. The wide selection of easy-to-install lights that are now available at your favorite home-improvement store will help you achieve visual effects that you will enjoy often.

Spotlight a Special Picture

Tiny but powerful, modern halogen lamps are adjustable and are perfectly suited for adding light exactly where you need it. Halogen most closely approximates natural daylight and is considered the best artificial light for reading, writing or working on a computer. Direct the bright white beam from the light to illuminate your favorite art piece. The mobility and unique brightness of halogen makes this light a must for every home.Into the Light by Li-Leger

Hiding Electrical Cords

The optimal way for cords to be hidden would be to hire a licensed electrician to hardwire the picture lights with a recessed outlet behind the artwork. Outlets may be added near pictures and the cords concealed with a PVC cord cover, which can be painted or stained to match the walls or woodwork in the room.

You may also use cord covers to run the light cord to the nearest outlet provided the cord will reach. Self-adhesive backing makes cord covers easy to install. Cord covers are available at your local home improvement and hardware stores. In addition, we suggest placing furniture or home furnishings in front of cords to help hide them. Follow all standard electrical and safety guidelines, and if unsure, consult a licensed electrician.

Choose the Right Size Light Fixture

Picture lights come in several lengths ranging from 7" to 32". Using our suggested size guide below, choose the length that will most effectively illuminate your picture. Your illumination preferences may vary; we suggest these sizes and measurements as a guide.

Suggested Light Fixture Widths for Common Frame Sizes:

  • 12" wide fixture for frames 24" wide
  • 25" wide fixture for frames 37"+ wide
  • 38"+ wide fixture for supersized frames
