Narrow rooms will give the sensation of insufficient space and will be quite uncomfortable if the eye cannot find visual elements that will counter the vertical squeeze. Paint one of the walls in the room a dark, rich color. Hang an exciting, colorful print on that wall, and hang a large mirror on a neighboring wall. The reflected art and the additional color on the wall will make the room appear wider by creating the illusion of depth. Some rooms might seem smaller than they are, or look cluttered to the eye. Place art prints with strong horizontal lines on your walls, such as a large landscape print with a faraway horizon. This creates an illusion of more space. Panoramic motifs like mountain ranges, natural vistas and wide-lens photography are extremely adept at extending room size visually. Try pieces with light, expansive colors. |
Low ceilings have an oppressive feeling to them and the eye looks for a way out quickly. Hang prints with strong vertical lines to reinforce the perception of heightened ceilings. You can also use a portrait-style format that will give a sense of height. Art prints that will help you achieve this effect include tree lines, buildings, columns and stairways. Start by using a darker floor treatment to ground the room and create a visual separation between the floor and the walls. Then paint the walls and ceiling using a light color. The contrast in color will naturally draw the eye upward. Landscapes, windows and doorways lead the eye outward, which creates the illusion of added space and light. |
